해외 한국학 교육을 위한 한국 문화유산 디지털 큐레이션 모델(2024년)

이 연구는 해외 한국학 교육 현장에서 한국 문화유산 관련 해설 자료의 접근성을 개선할 수 있는 디지털 큐레이션 모델의 설계 및 이 설계에 의한 데이터 아카이브의 구현을 목표로 수행되었다.

한국 문화유산은 한국에 관한 인문학적 연구의 근거 자료로서 매우 중요하고 다면적‧감각적 성격으로 교육 자원으로서 가치가 높은데도 불구하고 해외 한국학 교육에서 의미 있게 다루고 있지 않은 상황이다.

문화유산활용을 가로막는 언어‧문화적 장벽을 해소하기 위해서는 국내외의 여러 기관에서 생산한 해설 자료를 효과적으로 활용하는 것이 중요하다. 문화유산 해설 자료는 단순히 유적지 안내판, 책, 논문 등 글 기반의 자료가 아니라 영상, 가상 현실, 3D모델 등 실감 미디어도 포함하며 영화와 소설, 기념품 등 창의적 문화 상품과 학술대회, 공연, 체험 등 문화 활동까지 이루어진다. 본 연구에서는 외국인 대상으로 하는 문화유산 해설 자료의 현황을 파악하고 조사된 자료가 실제로 해외 한국학 교육에 활용될 수 있는 가능성, 활용도를 높이기 위한 방안 등을 단계적으로 강구하였다.

현재 외국인 대상으로 하는 한국 문화유산 해설 자료의 건수가 상당하지만 한국 문화에 대해서 배우는 외국인의 관점으로 활용하기 편하게 제공되고 있지 않은 문제를 확인할 수 있었다. 특히 현존 자료가 수많은 정부‧교육기관 등의 웹사이트에서 주제가 서로 관련이 있는 자료가 흩어져 있으며 자료를 관람하기 위한 검색 기능, 하이퍼링크 등이 미흡한 경우가 일반적이었다.

해결 방안을 찾기 위해 여러 국내외 문화유산 또는 한국학 관련 디지털 큐레이션 사례를 검토하고 그 사례 중에 일부에 대해서는 그 데이터 설계를 더 자세히 검토하도록 하였다. 이를 바탕으로 ‘연결된 자료를 위한 시맨틱 포털’(Semantic Portal for Linked Materials)이라 새로운 디지털 큐레이션 모델을 제시하였다. 이 모델은 문화유산과 같은 1차 자료와 3차 자료인 백과사전에서 찾을 수 있는 맥락정보를 서로 의미있게 연결하는 김현의 ‘백과사전적 아카이브’ 모델을 기반으로 교육현장에서 필요한 2차적인 참고자료와 4차적인 활동자료도 맥락있게 연결하도록 설계되어 있다. 특히 다양한 기관의 관점과 성격이 상이한 해설 자료를 한 곳에서 투명성 있게 공유하고 발견할 수 있도록 ‘자료의 저장소’가 아닌 ‘지식의 포털’ 형태를 보이는 모델이다.

이 모델의 가능성을 증명하기 위해 시맨틱 미디어위키를 비롯한 오픈소스 소프트웨어를 이용하여 사용이 가능한 온라인 플랫폼을 구현하였다. 이 플랫폼을 위해 설계한 데이터 모델은 ‘문화유산 해설 온톨로지’(Heritage Interpretation Ontology, hi)라고 명명하였다. 이 온톨로지를 기반으로 시맨틱 데이터의 입력, 검색, 표현 등 누구나 간단한 양식을 통해 할 수 있도록 하였는데, 이 기능은 미디어 위키 소프트웨어 상에서 운용될 수 있도록 하였다. 이 온라인 프랫폼을 활용하면 서로 관련이 있는 문화유산, 맥락정보, 참고 자료, 활동 기회 간의 관계를 시맨틱 데이터를 통해 맺는 것을 자동화할 수 있고, 디지털 기술의 전문가가 아닌 인문학 교사와 학생들도 문화적 지식의 디지털 큐레이션에 직접 참여할 수 있다.

끝으로 이와 같은 해외 한국학 교육을 위한 한국 문화유산 해설 자료 플랫폼은 누가 어떻게 활용하고 운용하면 효과적일지에 대한 제안을 하며 정부 기관 등 문화유산 해설 자료를 제공하는 자와 외국인 학생 등 문화유산 해설 자료를 사용하는 자가 어떤 기능을 이용해 자료를 효율적으로 공유하고 발견할 수 있는지에 대한 활용 사례를 제시함으로써 본 연구의 디지털 큐레이션 모델이 해외 한국학 교육현장에서 한국 문화유산의 활용을 촉진할 가능성을 증명하고자 하였다.

English Title: Digital Curation Model of Korean Cultural Heritage for Global Korean Studies Education (2024)

This dissertation implements a digital curation methodology to present a means to improve the accessibility of heritage interpretation materials on Korean cultural heritage so that Korean cultural heritage can be better incorporated into global Korean Studies education.

In Chapter 1, I explain the background for the research, look at the existing research on the topic, and present the research methodology.

In Chapter 2, I survey the current status of Korean cultural heritage, looking at the number and types Korean heritage in South Korea, North Korea, and overseas, as well as the various government regulations regarding Korean cultural heritage. Based on this, I then explore why Korean cultural heritage is useful in the context of global Korean Studies education, i.e. education about Korean history and culture targeting non-Korean speaking audiences. In particular, I argue that in addition to its value as a primary resource for humanities knowledge, Korean cultural heritage has a multifaceted and sensory nature that makes it particularly useful in a global educational context. However, despite this value, Korean cultural heritage has not been sufficiently incorporated into Korean Studies education due to geographic and cultural-linguistic barriers.

In Chapter 3, I argue that the aforementioned barriers can be overcome through the use of heritage interpretation materials, including not only text-based materials but also sensory (visual, auditory) materials. I surveyed numerous English-language materials by various institutions to gain an understanding of what heritage interpretation materials are currently available. Based on this survey, it was found that there already exists a significant number of such materials, however these materials were found to have poor accessibility in terms of both content and environment (user interface, etc.) when considered from the perspective of heritage interpretation ideals, making them difficult to be utilized in global Korean Studies education. Based on this, I propose tasks that need to be addressed in order to remedy this situation.

In Chapter 4, in order to address the aforementioned tasks for improving the accessibility of heritage interpretation materials for use in global Korean Studies education, I argue for the importance of the digital curation of interpretive materials on Korean cultural heritage. To this end, I review various digital curation case studies related to cultural heritage and Korean history and culture, taking a closer look at the data models (ontologies) of a few of the more comprehensive case studies. With these case studies in mind, I present a new digital curation model, which builds upon the “encyclopedic archives” curation model proposed by Kim Hyeon and existing “linked open data” curation models used in the cultural heritage sphere. The model, entitled the Semantic Portal for Linked Materials, aims to bring together related yet digitally scattered heritage interpretation materials via a portal that shows the meaningful relationships between the materials through semantic linked data. The model proposes that there are four kinds of interpretive materials, namely heritage (primary resources), references (secondary resources), context (tertiary resources), and activities (quaternary resources), that can be arranged on the axes of reality-interpretation and manifestation-knowledge. These materials interact with one another in the context of the “heritage interpretation lifecycle,” defining, acting upon, and drawing upon one another.

In Chapter 5, I propose a method for realizing this digital curation model through the design of an ontology for semantic data modeling and an online platform for data input, query, and display. The platform is based on the free, open-source software Semantic MediaWiki, and the ontology draws upon the data models reviewed in Chapter 4, while also maximizing upon the features provided by the Semantic MediaWiki software. The proposed ontology, named the Heritage Interpretation Ontology, utilizes “subobjects,” a feature of Semantic MediaWiki, to allow for a simple yet customizable data schema. The platform also uses MediaWiki extensions such as Page Forms to allow for the easy input, search, and display of semantic data.

In Chapter 6, I then explain how and by whom such a platform might be used and demonstrate how to utilize the platform for the purpose of Korean Studies education, looking from the perspective of interpretive material producers, consumers, and prosumers. The usage examples help to show how the digital curation model and the ontology/platform introduced in chapters 4 and 5 can help address the issue of Korean cultural heritage interpretive material accessibility, and in turn, help to improve the utilization of Korean cultural heritage in the Korean Studies educational environment.

In Chapter 7, I conclude by summarizing the research and commenting on the potential research effects.

Overall, this research contributes to the fields of Korean heritage, heritage interpretation, and global Korean Studies by not only providing an overview and review of the current scope and accessibility of relevant resources, but also by proposing a novel digital curation model that comprehensively addresses and overcomes the limitations of incorporating cultural heritage into a global and digital educational environment, and by creating a functional online platform that demonstrates how open-source software and semantic data can be utilized to enable the contextualized, transparent, organic, and mutually beneficial sharing and discovery of heritage interpretation materials.

Data-based Heritage Interpretation – An Ontology Design for Interpretive Information of Korean Cultural Heritages (2017)

This thesis delves into the question of how we might maximize the potential of heritage interpretation in the digital age. It does so by looking at the way heritage interpretation is currently approached in Korea and suggesting a to-be model which may better accomplish the objectives of heritage interpretation. More specifically, the thesis presents five ideals of heritage interpretation which are based on a wide review of prior scholarship on the topic, evaluates the status of Korean cultural heritage interpretive content based on these five ideals, considers how these ideals can be approached from a data-based perspective, presents an ontology that addresses the current weaknesses and limitations of Korean cultural heritage interpretive resources while making use of the potential of digital technology to better accomplish the objectives of heritage interpretation, and demonstrates examples of such a data-based approach by implementing the ontology in a labeled property graph.

Korean Title: 데이터 기반 문화유산 해설 방법 연구(2017년)

본 논문은 디지털 시대에 문화유산 해설의 가능성을 어떻게 극대화할 수 있는지에 대해 답변하고자 한다. 한국의 문화유산 해설이 현재 어떻게 이루어지고 있는지 살펴보고 해설의 목적을 더 잘 달성하게 하는 미래의 모델을 제시함으로써 이 질문에 응답하고자 한다. 구체적으로, 본 논문에서는 문화유산 해설의 개념을 정의하고 해설의 중심이 되는 다섯 가지의 기준을 선정한다. 이 다섯 가지 기준으로 현대의 한국 문화유산 해설 콘텐츠를 평가하고 데이터 기반의 관점으로 이 기준들을 바라보았을 때 접근하는 방법들을 고려한다. 마지막으로 현재 한국문화유산 해설의 약점과 한계를 고려하고 해설의 목적을 더 잘 달성하게 하는 디지털 기술의 가능성을 고려함으로써 링크드 데이터 온톨로지를 설계하여 제시한다.
